Testing at least 16 markers ensures accurate, conclusive results.

Beta Paternity analyzes a minimum of 16 DNA markers in every paternity test we perform. This includes the 13 markers used by the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

In a paternity test, our scientists compare the markers in the child’s DNA profile to the markers in the alleged father’s and mother’s DNA profiles, looking for evidence of genetic inheritance. (A child inherits one-half of his or her DNA from the biological father and one-half from the biological mother, so the child’s profile should share at least half of the same markers with each parent’s profile.)

Every marker that matches between the child’s profile and the alleged father’s profile is given a Paternity Index (PI) score. Every non-match is given a PI score of 0. The PIs are then multiplied to generate the Combined Paternity Index (CPI), which is converted to a probability of paternity value.

A high-quality laboratory should guarantee at least a 99.99% probability of paternity for an inclusion result on a paternity test. (An inclusion result implies that the tested father is the biological father of the child.) Beta Paternity’s extensive testing battery enables us to give you an even higher guarantee—99.9999% if the mother participates in the testing.

In unusual or complex cases (for example, cases involving related alleged fathers, incestuous relationships, or genetic mutations), Beta Paternity can perform extended testing and statistical analysis to prevent false exclusions and ensure accurate, conclusive results.
