Genetic reconstruction is a series of DNA tests conducted to determine if a child is biologically related to a family. It is often used to indirectly determine paternity when a
paternity test
cannot be completed because the father is missing or deceased. It is also used to confirm biological relationships for those who have been separated from their family by adoption or other circumstances.
Tested Parties
In genetic reconstruction, DNA profiles of the
child
and the
mother
are compared with profiles of
at least two of the alleged father’s close relatives
. A close relative can be a biological parent, full brother, or full sister of the alleged father. Because of the complexity of the test, the mother’s participation is required during genetic reconstruction.
Genetic reconstruction cases may involve other situations not described above. We encourage you to call us at

for a free consultation with one of our specialists to discuss your particular situation. Beta Paternity is one of the few laboratories able to offer genetic reconstruction. Our staff is highly experienced in solving family relationship questions.
Sample Collection
We will send you a Beta Self-Collection™ kit containing everything you need to collect DNA samples.
Sample collection
is painless and simple. You will use buccal swabs, which are like long Q-tips, to collect loose cheek cells by rubbing against the inner cheek. For more details, please visit the
sample collection page
.
If you require a test for immigration, Social Security, or other legal purposes, please visit the
legal testing option
page. While convenient and private, sample collection using the Beta Self-Collection™ kit does not follow the Chain of Custody collection procedure needed for DNA test results to be accepted in courts and other government agencies. This procedure requires you to go to an appointment to have your samples collected by an unbiased third party, usually a trained professional.
